Three places to base yourself
Most visitors choose between the riverfront in the city center, a resort on the Hau River outside the center, and a homestay in the orchards. The categories overlap, so treat them as a rough guide rather than strict zones. The question that matters most is where you want to be at dawn, because the Cai Rang floating market is best in the early morning.
Cai Rang lies on the Can Tho and Cai Rang rivers, about 5 km from the center and roughly 30 minutes by boat from the Ninh Kieu quay. These are rough values from the local tourism office, not a timetable. The examples below come with published rates. There are no booking links on this page, so check availability and rates with the property.

Ninh Kieu and the center
Ninh Kieu is the park and promenade where the Hau River meets the Can Tho River, with Hai Ba Trung as the riverside road. The local tourism office lists hotels along the promenade. The tourism database shows access from 00:00 to 23:59, but leaves the price field as "updating". Do not assume the quay is free of charge.
Choose this area if you want to walk to restaurants and the evening promenade and meet your boat tour near the center. One Can Tho boat tour, for example, meets at 156 Hai Ba Trung and offers hotel pick-up within a radius of 3 km. Ask your hotel whether it can book a boat for 05:00 or 06:00.
A riverside resort
Victoria Can Tho Resort stands on the Hau River in Cai Khe, with pools and its own excursions. Its Cai Rang excursion leaves at 06:00, and a market plus cacao farm combination runs from 06:00 to 10:00. Daily operation and free places are not guaranteed, so ask when you book.
The same group publishes a private sampan program called Night On The River: two days and one night, from the resort at 10:00 with Cai Rang the next morning. The rate is VND 11,386,000 net per person for a minimum of 2 people, valid from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. It does not include a transfer from Ho Chi Minh City.
Homestays and bungalows
Mekong Rustic Can Tho offers bungalows in orchards in the Phong Dien area. Its Can Tho category page lists a Double Room at USD 60, a Triple Bungalow at USD 85 per night and a Family Bungalow Hideaway at USD 100 per night. The unit for the Double Room is not labeled as clearly, so confirm it. Taxes, breakfast and the price for children are not shown, so ask for a full quote.
Rural stays like this are not on the Ninh Kieu waterfront. Ask the host about the way to the market and to town, and about boat transfers if you plan a dawn trip. Check access and the weather before a late arrival.
Check before you book
Check-in and check-out times, tourist taxes, minimum stays and cancellation rules differ between properties, so confirm them in writing. The rainy season runs from May to November according to the national tourism organization, and December to April is drier. Heavy rain or high tides can flood streets. On 14 September 2026 the Can Tho police reported flooding in Binh Thuy district, so ask your host about local access.
