Cai Rang at a glance
Cai Rang lies on the Can Tho River, about 5 km from the city center. The local tourism office says it takes about 30 minutes by boat from the Ninh Kieu quay. The market was recognized as national intangible cultural heritage in 2016. That is a national listing, not a UNESCO World Heritage status.
Traders sell their goods, such as fruit, from boats, and visitors come in smaller boats to watch. The tourism office recommends 5:00 to 8:00 am for the trade. The same listing shows much wider opening hours, but that entry is unclear, so do not plan on an evening market. This is an independent guide, not the market management.

What to expect in 2026
Honest points before you set your alarm.
The market has declined
A Tuoi Tre report from 25 February 2026 describes traders moving to the road and criticism of prices, touts and hygiene. It does not say the market has closed, and it gives no count of boats. Expect fewer vessels than in older photos.
A pier stopped taking visitors
The same report mentions that a market pier stopped accepting visitors during Tet 2026 after price problems. That does not show a permanent closure or a ban that still applies today. Ask your operator which pier and boat they use.
No clear entry fee
The local listing shows a price field with no figure. Do not assume it is free or paid. Your boat or tour price is what you will actually pay, so ask what it includes.
No fixed closing day
No weekly rest day and no required advance booking is published. Book a tour in advance anyway if you want a seat on a specific morning, because availability is not guaranteed.

How to visit, step by step
A simple morning plan.
Stay in Can Tho the night before
Boats leave early. Staying close to Ninh Kieu means a short start to your day.
Where to stay โStart early
The tour package above starts at 5:00 am. One hotel resort lists a 6:00 am departure for Cai Rang. Ask when your boat actually reaches the market, because trading is the point of the trip.
Agree the price and stops first
Ask the total, what food and drinks are included and where you will stop. Do not agree to extras you did not ask for.
Coming from Ho Chi Minh City
A day trip exists, from 3:30 am to 4:30 pm. Most visitors find a night in Can Tho more relaxed. See how the tours compare on our tours page and read about transport on getting there.
Tips for the boat
- Wear the life jacket your boat provides.
- Bring small bills in dong for fruit and drinks. Cash is the safe choice at market stalls.
- Ask before you photograph vendors, and do not photograph children.
- Bring sun protection and a light rain layer. The rainy season runs May to November, per the national tourism organization.
- In heavy rain, ask the operator whether the boat activities change.
For another view of the delta's water life, Cam Thanh near Hoi An offers a basket boat ride, and Phu Quoc is a place to go afterward for the sea.
